SCOTUS Green Lights Trump Deportations to Danger
Statement by Refugees International Director for Americas and Europe Dr. Yael Schacher:
“On Monday, the Supreme Court gave the green light to the Trump administration to ignore court orders and deport people without a hearing—even to countries where their lives may be in danger. In a brief shadow docket order, the majority offered little explanation and no clarity on whether plaintiffs in the case could now be sent to places like South Sudan.
Refugees International is outraged by this decision, which undermines the rule of law, the rights of immigrants, and U.S. obligations under the Convention Against Torture. We have documented the human rights violations already caused by third-country removals under Trump. Now, this ruling opens the door even wider—allowing masked officers to arrest, detain, and send thousands of people, including families and asylum seekers with no criminal record, into harm’s way in dangerous countries.”
