Refugees International Welcomes TPS Redesignation and Extension for Haiti
Statement by Refugees International Director for the Americas and Europe Yael Schacher:
“Refugees International welcomes the extension and redesignation of Haiti for Temporary Protected Status. This policy will newly provide much needed protection and eligibility for work authorization through February 3, 2026 to Haitians who have come to the United States between November 7, 2022 and June 3, 2024. Current TPS Haiti holders must re-register during the 60-day period from July 1, 2024, through August 30, 2024, to maintain their status and work authorization. Thanks to this policy—championed especially by Haitian-led organizations and leaders—thousands of Haitian members of our communities can work and support their families in safety.
Insecurity and humanitarian challenges, exacerbated by climate disasters, make Haiti unsafe for return, and we urge the Biden administration to halt all removals and returns to Haiti by air or by sea. Further, Refugees International urges the Biden administration to increase the availability of humanitarian parole for Haitians and increase humanitarian aid to support internally displaced people in Haiti.”
