Refugees International Welcomes ICJ Opinion on Obligations of States in Respect of Climate Change
Statement by Refugees International Senior Advocate and Program Manager of the Climate Displacement Program Jocelyn Perry:
“Refugees International welcomes today’s long-awaited International Court of Justice (ICJ) advisory opinion on the Obligations of States in respect of Climate Change. The advisory opinion affirms that countries have a legal responsibility to curb greenhouse gas emissions; confirms that developed nations must provide financial and other support to developing countries for climate mitigation and adaptation; and underscores the responsibility of states to make full reparations for losses and environmental damage.
Notably, Refugees International welcomes the Court’s confirmation that countries must also uphold the principle of non-refoulement, applying it to individuals seeking safety in another country due to conditions resulting from climate change that are likely to endanger their lives. Climate change continues to exacerbate disasters, destroy homes, harm communities, and force people to move.
With today’s ruling, frontline communities are one step closer to staying safely in their homes or to moving with the dignity, rights, and resources that they deserve.”
