Refugees International Stands in Solidarity with Neighbors in Washington DC and around the Country
Statement from Refugees International:
“Refugees International stands in solidarity with our neighbors here in Washington, DC – and around the country – who are fearful for their safety as the Trump administration deploys masked agents and armed soldiers to stop and detain community members in residential and commercial neighborhoods, at metro stations, parks, and schools, near restaurants and shops, and places of worship.
The District of Columbia is not being targeted due to crime, which has dropped for the last two years and is far lower than it was in the 1990-2000s. DC is being targeted because it is a city that has welcomed immigrants for decades and whose recent arrivals – including asylum seekers from Venezuela and elsewhere – contribute to the city’s vitality and strength.
As an organization proudly headquartered in the District for nearly fifty years, we are deeply concerned for the safety and rights of people who call this city home. And as an organization that works to support displaced people worldwide, we reaffirm our commitment to a future in which every member of our community can live with dignity, security, and belonging.”
