Refugees International Condemns U.S.–Costa Rica Deportation Agreement

Refugees International condemns the recent agreement that will provide U.S. State Department money to finance the deportation of migrants transiting through Costa Rica. This agreement outsources the Trump administration’s cruel immigration enforcement to other countries and is a misuse of U.S. funding. It comes even as the Trump administration has recognized that migration northward through the Darien Gap plummeted by 99 percent this year, meaning very few migrants are transiting through Costa Rica. Meanwhile, thousands of forcibly displaced people in Costa Rica need support accessing the asylum system and integrating into the country. 

Statement from Refugees International Senior Advocate for Latin America Rachel Schmidtke: 

“Instead of financing deportation agreements, the U.S. should use that money to support the Costa Rican asylum system, which is facing a 77 percent reduction in its capacity to register newly arrived asylum seekers. Funding for the asylum system would allow more people seeking protection to stay in Costa Rica and access legal status and services–a much smarter use of State Department funds.” 

Statement from Refugees International Director for the Americas and Europe Yael Schacher: 

“The Trump administration is using agreements with third countries and Congressionally appropriated funds to undermine human rights for migrants not only in the United States but in other countries in the Americas and worldwide. Members of Congress must scrutinize, and leaders of other countries must oppose, this counterproductive and inhumane race to the bottom.”

Refugees International condena el acuerdo de deportación entre EE. UU. y Costa Rica

Refugees International condena el reciente acuerdo que otorgará fondos del Departamento de Estado de EE. UU. para financiar la deportación de migrantes que transitan por Costa Rica. Este acuerdo externaliza la cruel aplicación de las leyes migratorias de la administración Trump a otros países y constituye un uso indebido de los fondos estadounidenses. Esto ocurre incluso en un momento en que la administración Trump ha reconocido que la migración hacia el norte a través del Tapón del Darién se desplomó un 99 % este año, lo que significa que muy pocos migrantes transitan por Costa Rica. Mientras tanto, miles de personas desplazadas forzosamente en Costa Rica necesitan apoyo para acceder al sistema de asilo e integrarse en el país.

“En lugar de financiar acuerdos de deportación, Estados Unidos debería usar ese dinero para apoyar el sistema de refugio costarricense, que enfrenta una reducción del 77 % en su capacidad para registrar a los solicitantes de asilo recién llegados. Financiar el sistema de refugio permitiría que más personas que buscan protección permanezcan en Costa Rica y accedan a un estatus legal y servicios, lo que representa un uso mucho más inteligente de los fondos del Departamento de Estado”.

“El gobierno de Trump está utilizando acuerdos con terceros países y fondos asignados por el Congreso para socavar los derechos humanos de los migrantes, no sólo en Estados Unidos, sino también en otros países de las Américas y en todo el mundo. Los miembros del Congreso deben analizar detenidamente, y los líderes de otros países deben oponerse, a esta carrera contraproducente e inhumana hacia el abismo”.
