Refugees International Statement on Trump Administration’s Humanitarian Relief Cuts
Statement from Eric Schwartz, president, Refugees International:
“The Trump administration’s budget request for international humanitarian assistance for 2020 is appalling. With tens of millions of civilians at grave risk around the world, the president—who has boasted about American humanitarian leadership—proposes to slash life-saving and life-sustaining international relief by more than 33 percent. Moreover, his proposal would severely damage the State Department’s capacity to assist and protect refugees by effectively eliminating the authority of the State Department Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration to administer refugee assistance around the world. Congress, which has not been consulted about these changes, must push back to reassert the U.S. commitment to generous support and assistance to civilian populations at risk.”
