The Chicago Circle brings together a citywide group of committed, non-partisan and informed leaders. Circle members help strengthen Refugees International's lifesaving advocacy by focusing on regional outreach, public awareness and broadening RI's philanthropic base.
Ambassador Arturo Sarukhán is the former Ambassador of Mexico to the United States. As the son and grandson of refugees who relocated to Mexico, Ambassador Sarukhán provides his perspectives on a growing challenge in his country - substantial numbers of Mexican citizens being displaced within their country by violent criminal groups.
The rapid rise and proliferation of violence criminal groups in Mexico has resulted in more than 50,000 deaths in the last five years. Extortion, rape, forced recruitment, and kidnapping are rampant, and estimates range from one to 1.6 million for the number of people who have been forcibly replaced from their homes.
RI conducted a mission to Mexico in June 2014. Advocates traveled to Mexico City and four different states to interview citizens who fled their communities due to extreme violence. RI is the first United States-based organization to examine the depth of this hidden crisis.
