Congress and the Biden administration are currently negotiating a one-time budget deal that would potentially trade away a permanent weakening of asylum law—placing the lives of countless people seeking safety at risk. Another proposed change, expanding expedited removal nationwide, would lead to racial profiling and violations of civil liberties, sow fear among immigrant workers, and lead to separation of families.
We cannot let this happen.
These changes would violate international law, codify Trump administration policies that Biden promised to reverse, and betray America’s tradition of welcome. They are dangerous and irresponsible. The measures will not stop people fleeing harm from coming to the U.S. border to seek safety. Congress cannot ignore the political and humanitarian realities globally that are increasing displacement. Gutting asylum protection and expanding expedited removal nationwide will merely make it more difficult to manage the border and incite mistrust and fear in U.S. communities.
America’s history of providing refuge to people seeking safety should not be bartered away in a budget deal. We need your urgent help. Contact your members of Congress today, and urge them not to turn their backs on people fleeing harm and instead focus their attention on productive and humane solutions for the realities of our time.
