Thousands of refugees returned home to the Swat Valley in Pakistan today as the security forces claimed that the Taleban insurgents had been largely eliminated from the region. Almost two million people were displaced by intensive fighting between militants and US-backed Pakistani forces, which began in April near the Afghan border. Today, families were told that they could leave refugee camps and relatives' homes.
