Nearly three months after the Darfur Peace Agreement was signed, peace is a distant hope for the town of Gereida in South Darfur. In the last year, the number of displaced people who have fled to the camp that surrounds the town has grown from 30,000 to 128,000. Meanwhile, government-supported Arab militias known as the Janjaweed arrive almost every night to steal cattle, goats, sheep and other valuables from people - shooting the few people who try to defend themselves. The Sudan Liberation Army led by Minni Minawi, who controls this region of South Darfur, was the only one of the three major rebel groups to sign the Darfur Peace Agreement. His faction says that it is following the ceasefire and will not fight the Janjaweed, thereby leaving this town with no protection from the ongoing attacks.
