Visual Mission: Displaced family Illustrates Continuing Violence in Darfur

In Darfur, ongoing fighting between rebel and government forces has triggered vicious attacks against civilians. This family represents just a few of the two million people -- one third the population of Darfur -- who have been forced to flee from their farms and villages.

Four generations of this family of 20 in Darfur walked for three days to reach the safety of the Gallap camp for internally displaced. They came from Khor Abeche, which they said was attacked only one week ago by the Janjaweed -- a militia group that often works with government forces. The Gallap camp already holds about 12,640 people, but the number is growing daily.

As this family fled the Janjaweed militia, they brought all they could, including a chicken and three chicks. Most family members walked the 3-day journey, though a few rode one of their five donkeys.
