Visual Mission: The Nuba Mountains of Sudan

The Nuba Mountains in central Sudan were cut off from the outside world for many years due to a civil war between the government in Khartoum and the Sudan People's Liberation Army/Movement (SPLA). The United States and Switzerland brokered a ceasefire agreement in January 2002 and the area has since enjoyed a fragile peace. About 1.5 million people live in the Nuba Mountains, of which 350,000 are under the administration of the SPLA and the remainder under government control. Refugees International recently visited the SPLA-controlled area of the Nuba Mountains.

RI wishes to thank the Diocese of El Obeid for facilitating our visit there.

Senior Advocate Larry Thompson just returned from a three-week mission to Sudan and Ethiopia.

A Russian-made Antonov cargo plane delivers a load of construction material, medicines, and passengers to the Nuba Mountains. Southern Sudan is dotted with airfields as cargo flights from Kenya have long been the only way for humanitarian aid to reach SPLA controlled areas. Food and other humanitarian aid is still air-dropped to Sudanese in remote, dangerous areas of southern Sudan. The ceasefire in the Nuba Mountains has made it possible for a limited amount of cross-border trade and movement of people to take place between government and SPLA controlled areas.
