Thailand 2007: Health Care for Burmese Refugees

Health care in Burma is an extremely scarce commodity with only 4% of the country’s budget set aside for this purpose. Dr. Chris Beyer of Johns Hopkins has called Burma a “longstanding complex humanitarian crisis.” For the 150,000 Burmese refugees living in one of the 10 official camps in Thailand, health care funded by the international community is readily available in hospitals and clinics staffed by expatriate, Thai and Burmese medical personnel and provided without charge to the refugees.
