Chad 2007: A woman displaced from her village near the Darfur border

This woman was forced from her home when rebels from Darfur crossed into Chad and attacked her village. Here, she is collecting firewood and returning to her home - a straw hut on the outskirts of the town of Goz Beida. The United Nations Security Council is currently debating whether to send a force to this area of eastern Chad near Darfur’s border. While such protection is laudable and necessary, the realities of deploying the multidimensional presence proposed by the UN Secretary-General may in fact pose unacceptable risks to civilians—and may arrive too late to protect those most at risk.
