The number of women and girls who survive rape and sexual violence in the DRC is staggering. Last year 25,000 cases of rape were reported, while many more probably occurred but survivors opted for silence to avoid ostracism and stigma. In terms of response, many Congolese groups, but too few international agencies, are doing the best they can to help them. Much more must be done. Too little is happening to address the impunity enjoyed by perpetrators, making prevention often an empty word. Also unaddressed are the underlying factors related to rape in Congolese society. Finally, not enough resources are available to support existing groups helping survivors. If the first two priorities require a long term perspective and strategy, international donors must tackle that of lack of resources now.
