Darfur 2005: Sudanese Policewoman Reads Form 8

12/06/2005

In Otash, two of the five Sudanese police officers that do the firewood patrols are women. One of the problems that Sudanese women have faced in the past is that they must fill out a police report, or “Form 8”, before they can receive medical attention. While this law has recently been clarified to state that survivors do not have to fill out a Form 8, many of the Sudanese police and their AU civilian police monitors are unaware of this change. In this photo, a Sudanese Police woman examines an Arabic version of the law clarification that was given to her by RI. “I have not seen this before and I have not received any formal training. I do this work from the experience I have and I would like more training. There have been attacks here even just a few weeks ago. I take women to the hospital and try to get them assistance if they have been attacked.”
