The AU is also suffering from a lack of firepower and equipment. As one AMIS officer told us, “How can we defend civilians if we can’t even defend ourselves?” Part of this defense and deterrence capability lies in the equipment; AMIS needs donors to provide them with more and better equipment.
The Government of Sudan also has to stop throwing obstacles in AMIS path. Canada donated 105 APCs to AMIS. The Government of Sudan has only reluctantly let 35 of them in the country, claiming that they could be captured by the rebels and used against them. The rest of the APCs are sitting in Senegal.
