At this school OfERR provided bicycles and shoes and ties for the students. Overall, the RI team was impressed with OfERR’s use of the funding provided. Rather than devoting the funds to a single project or activity, they used it to provide needed strategic items that would have a quick impact. The bicycles were critical for students who needed them to commute to school, while the shoes and ties gave the children a sense that they could again look like well-dressed, “smart” students even in the aftermath of the tsunami. The ties were made by Sri Lankan refugees in India in camps where OfERR provides support and shipped to their displaced brethren in Batticaloa.
