Kosovo 2005: Roma child with lead poisoning

06/10/2005

This child is living in a camp for displaced Roma in Kosovo that is irretrievably polluted with lead. The father of this little girl was told by some international doctors that his daughter has high lead in her blood, but he does not believe it because nothing was done for her. Still, he has noticed that she is not developing normally. She cannot walk without holding on to her parents or the walls of the barracks. She cries a lot at night with pain in her legs. She often has fevers and vomits and she is very small for her age. He cannot wake her up sometimes and this scares him.

Refugees International is calling for the immediate evacuation of all pregnant women and children from birth to six years old, and any person tested with high levels of lead in their blood.
