DRC 2005: Repainting the Car

Attacks on humanitarian agencies have become frequent -- limiting the ability of agencies to move very far outside of the major towns of Ituri. Because the peacekeepers have become a target, humanitarian agencies feel the need to differentiate themselves so as to maintain a tenuous humanitarian space in which to assist the vulnerable. Humanitarian agencies have begun to repaint their cars so they are not mistaken for the ubiquitous white SUVs of the UN. Doctors without Borders has chosen hot pink, German Agro-Action has chosen green, and CESVI –- an Italian humanitarian agency -- has chosen orange.
