Darfur 2004: Masteri Woman Flees Violence

This woman witnessed her son being executed, shot in the head by the Janjaweed militia in Darfur. She was the only family member left behind to bury her son, and so she dug his grave and laid him to rest. She and her seven children were struggling to get enough food, water and shelter to stay alive in the small village of Masteri, which is located south of Al Genenia in West Darfur.

Refugees International is advocating for a swift and forceful response to the Darfur crisis, including better coordination of and more provision of humanitarian aid and establishment of an effective peacekeeping force to protect civilians like this woman and her family.
