Estonia 2004: Bridge to Russian Border

The Narva River forms the border between Estonia and Russia. Estonians citizens need a visa to go to Russia for supplies, such as cheaper gas. This has been a factor in the choice of some of the Russian-speaking population to take Russian citizenship. They want to be able to visit relatives or travel freely without additional documentation. The Narva/Ivangorod border bridge was closed earlier this year when strained relations between Russia and Estonia flared. The temporary shutdown halted commercial trade and individual movement.
