Sudan (south) 2004: Women Selling Beer in Nuba Mountains

11/16/2004

These women are selling beer brewed from millet and served in gourds. Markets have sprung up all over the Nuba Mountains since the civil war and they serve as social gathering places. The main products sold in the markets are fruits, vegetables, flashlight batteries, and beer. Almost all Nubans are subsistence farmers; barter is common; and few economic opportunities exist other than farming and herding. Many people still need food aid from the World Food Program to get by. The greatest fear of Nubans is that the war will resume and they will again be forced from their homes.
