Many women are not so lucky. This young girl was attacked by Janjaweed and branded on the arm. In Zam Zam camp in North Darfur, seven girls who had been collecting firewood were held at a police check point until well after sunset. Fifteen minutes after being released, they were attacked. Three women were raped and abducted for more than two days. They were forced to walk back to their camp without any clothing. Women who have been raped are stigmatized within this society. “A woman who has been raped is like a piece of spoiled meat,” said one man, “Who would have her?”
