India 2004 -- Burmese Chin Woman in Mizoram

06/01/2004

In 2001, this woman was collecting firewood in the forest, when two Burmese soldiers tried to rape her. While trying to escape from the soldiers, she fell down the side of a small hill and since then her left arm has been paralyzed. Following this incident, she and her husband came to Mizoram and started living on the outskirts of Simhui. Her husband died in 2002. Since then she and her four children have been surviving through support provided by local church groups.

In August 2003, she received a letter from the YMA asking her to vacate her house and go back to Burma. Being partially paralyzed and having no place to go, she couldn't leave her house. She was not bothered by the YMA for the next few months, but then in May 2004, the YMA came back and warned her once again to leave. When asked by RI as to what she plans to do the next time YMA members come to her house, she replied, "...Even though the YMA tells me to go back to Burma, I will surely die there, so I will stay here and face this abuse..."
