India 2004: Burmese Chin Man in Simhui

06/01/2004

In 1997, while a student in Matupi township, this man was stopped by the SPDC army during a trip to Mandalay and forcibly conscripted, even though he repeatedly begged his captors to let him finish his education. After four months of training, he escaped from the SPDC military facility and went back to Matupi, but after two days an SPDC force came looking for him and he had no choice but to go to Mizoram. For the past several months he has been facing constant harassment by the YMA and has been evicted from his home, following which he came to Simhui camp. As a consequence of the February attack on the camp, he decided to go back to his village in Chin state. However, once in his village, he saw many soldiers under the command of Major San Aung. Fearing that someone would recognize him and he would be arrested by the SPDC, he came back to Simhui.
