The government of Sierra Leone's National Council for Social Action (NaCSA) works closely with UNHCR and private international and local nongovernmental organizations to broker refugee access to schools and to farm land in neighboring communities. NaCSA and UNHCR encourage farming and backyard gardening to augment refugee diets and to provide work. The UN Food and Agricultural Organization has shared its expertise with Sierra Leone to aid both its war affected citizens and the Liberian refugees by providing appropriate seeds and tools for backyard gardeners and for a small number of refugee farmers and host community farmers.
