The refugees cook over open fires and gather firewood from the surrounding scrub woodlands. Over time, firewood gathering will denude the hillsides and possibly create friction with the local population, which also depends upon firewood as a fuel. To preserve the forests, Refugees International recommends that aid agencies introduce the refugees and local communities to a fuel-efficient clay stove that can be produced locally at modest cost.
