Southern India- Cramped Conditions for Sri Lankan Tamil refugees

01/05/2004

In the Rayanoor Godown Camp in Karur district, 1,617 individuals from the Vavuniya district of Sri Lanka are living in very cramped conditions. Some refugees have been housed in godowns, or warehouses. Each family has a 10-by-10 foot section allocated to it with very little privacy. According to the refugees, there is almost no ventilation in the godowns and the situation becomes unbearable during summer months when the temperatures can go up to 110 degrees.
