Most noteworthy, perhaps, about the MILOBS is their humanity. Their conversation as they ride through the villages is about the suffering of the people. When they hear about a suspected kidnapping, they go straight to the scene and confront the armed suspects. They know their limitations—but they’re willing to push the envelope on behalf of the people. One fact is striking. In a land where people fear and hide from most uniformed people, they do not run from the MILOBS. They gather and talk. Sometimes they laugh. Almost always, the kids come up and hold their hands.
