“I returned from Kunduz last year. My wife died about three months ago. I have 6 children, all boys, and I have no one to help me cook and clean for them. See my son working in the field—he is my only son to go to school. Two of the children have donkeys, and they can earn a few cents each day carrying loads for people. I’m a potato farmer, and my crop should be good this year. I borrowed the seed from a shopkeeper in town and will give him part of the harvest. I am happy about returning but it is difficult for me to find enough food to feed my children. But, I have my house, I have my land, my children, and my freedom so I am happy. My biggest concern is continuing peace and stability. I am happy with my poor life as long as there is peace and security here. One of my sons died when the Taliban forced us to leave our homes. There has been too much fighting in this country. I have one word for President Karzai. He must keep the Coalition in Afghanistan. When the Coalition came, I stopped hearing shooting. Now at night, I can keep my house open and I know I will be safe.”
