Ethiopia 2003
02/04/2003
These water bladders, holding 6,000 liters of water each, are all that keep this village viable. A non-governmental organization replenishes them every other day with a water truck. Each family is entitled to one 20-liter jerry can of water daily. This is barely enough for drinking with little left over for other purposes. The bladders are guarded at night to ensure no theft. The nearest alternative water source to the village is five miles away – and may soon dry up. Due to the shortage of water and pasture in this region, few livestock remain. Most have died, been sold, or were driven to better watered areas.
