Ethiopia: Typical Brush Hut

Ethiopia 2003
02/05/2003

This is a typical brush hut in which the pastoralists live. They are about as poor in possessions as people can be, possessing little more than the clothes on their backs, a cooking pot, a milking/drinking gourd, and a blanket. Many of the men carry old assault rifles to protect their flocks against hyenas and other predators. Competition for grazing land has resulted in clashes among the Issas, the Afars, and the Oromos. There is no school in this community and the nearest health clinic is a long day’s walk away.
