This boy was injured by a land mine and brought to the hospital by his father. Decades of war have left millions of land mines scattered around Afghanistan and hundreds of people are killed or maimed every year. Minefields outlined by red-painted rocks are a common sight greeting the traveler in Afghanistan. Venturing off main roads is hazardous. Several de-mining organizations are clearing mines but the job will take years.
