Afghan Returnee and Child

Afghanistan 2002
05/23/2002

“I arrived at the border yesterday evening, and I spent the night at the UNHCR camp there. I arrived in Herat this morning, and I have been waiting here at a transit center outside Herat a few hours while my husband organizes our luggage.” This woman left Afghanistan eight years ago. She is originally from Baghlan, but she is going to Kabul. She learned from television that UNHCR was helping refugees return to Afghanistan, and she decided to leave Iran. She anticipates that her husband will be able to find a good job in Kabul. She doesn’t have any property, and she doesn’t have any relatives in Kabul, but she has heard that there will be assistance. The first thing she will do is to enroll her children in school.
