In this picture, Afghan children living in Shamshatoo camp are playing at an SOS playground. There are several of these playgrounds throughout the camp where children can play on swings, merry-go-rounds, and seesaws. In many refugee camps, there is a sad lack of recreational activities for children, although experts agree that providing children with the opportunity to play often helps them deal with the trauma of war and displacement. These playgrounds were made possible by a grant from the famous tenor, Lucianno Pavarotti.
