Elderly Afghan Woman

Pakistan 2001
12/27/2001

This woman arrived in Peshawar almost five months ago. She traveled to Pakistan with a group of people from her village, but she has no family. In this picture, she is waiting outside an NGO to receive food. Most Afghan refugees in Pakistan are urban refugees and have limited access to NGO social services. Single women find themselves in a particularly precarious situation. Women are unable to work, and in many cases, they resort to begging in order to survive.
