Afghan Man in Refugee Camp in Pakistan

Pakistan 2001
11/30/2001

This man was typical of a number of men that RI was able to interview. He had come with his family from the area around Kandahar, which at that point was the target of a sustained U.S. bombing campaign. Fear of the bombing was the primary motivation for leaving. This man paid about 2,000 Pakistani rupees ($33) to make the trip; others paid as much as 12,000 rupees. The point is that to make it across the border families had to have assets; the most vulnerable would have been unable to make this journey.
