In one Rift Valley community, Eldama Ravine, most people are small scale farmers. Approximately half of the population is Nubian. Refugees International was assured that the Nubian residents living there have identification cards. “We all have it,” one man reported. “When we have children, they have no problem.”

However, most Nubians do not have legal titles to the land they presently occupy. Nubians assumed they were legally entitled to the ownership of land provided, but the understanding of the British was that the Nubians only owned the houses they built and that the land would remain state land.
