South Sudan 2008: Moving From Food Aid to Food Security

The UN World Food Program has been providing three-month food rations to people returning to south Sudan. This is much-needed assistance to help people get back onto their feet and re-start their lives back in their villages. However, people need to receive seeds and tools at the same time as they receive food in order to become self-sufficient. Refugees International met with many people who had received seeds and tools after their food ration had run out. They did not have the energy to prepare their land for planting because of the lack of food. This type of lack of coordination in the provision of resources prevents people from moving towards food security and economic recovery.
