In North Kivu, recent offensive operations by the dissident General Laurent Nkunda and his troops have lead to massive displacement, and have tested the ill equipped, poorly trained, and largely undisciplined Congolese national army, the FARDC. To prevent Nkunda and his forces from overtaking key towns of Sake and Goma (the capital of North Kivu), MONUC, the UN peacekeeping mission in DRC, have deployed some 4,500 troops to the province to support the FARDC and deter further rebel attacks.
