Liberia 2007: Rudimentary training facilities for police

09/01/2007

The UN started the police training program in July 2004, after a temporary accommodation capacity for 600 trainees was established at the Police Academy. Students have to date been accommodated in rudimentary refugee camp style tents. Plans are well underway to create permanent facilities, through renovations and construction of buildings capable of sustaining long-term training courses with a daily capacity of 250 students, 180 of whom can be accommodated on campus in permanent structures.

The police salary in 2004 was US$17 per month, and was seldom paid. After graduation from the Academy, LNP officers now receive a regular salary of $83 per month. This was originally funded by the USA, but is now the responsibility of the Government of Liberia.
