A regular source of food is the priority for Lisa who is preparing the soil to plant sorghum. This is one of the crops that is part of the local diet and can be grown during the rainy season, which runs from June to November of each year. “We had to leave our villages years ago because of the conflict and we found sanctuary in South Darfur. We returned a month ago but we could not reach our original village because the rain made the road impassable. We may settle down here. There is plenty of land and we are close to town,” said Lisa. Sudanese who have returned with the help of UN agency or Government of South Sudan programs receive food rations, seeds, agricultural tools and other items. But only 10 to 20 percent of all returnees benefit from this assistance. The rest have to rely on their own means and help from family or friends.
