Refugees International traveled to Zimbabwe and South Africa in order to identify former farm workers from commercial farms that were seized by the government of Zimbabwe during the implementation of the fast-track land reform program.
In addition, the team assessed the condition of Zimbabweans who currently live in South Africa. Specifically, the team’s goal was to ascertain the condition of the Zimbabweans who fled Zimbabwe because of political violence, forced evictions and increased unemployment caused by the continuing worsening of the economic and living conditions there.
The team evaluated the incidence of gender based violence within both groups and expects to document how GBV and the progressive deterioration of the economic situation is contributing to the expansion of the HIV-AIDS pandemic amongst Zimbabweans.
