Lesley Stahl
Co-editor,
60 Minutes and CBS News Correspondent
Lesley Stahl has been
co-editor of 60 Minutes since
March 1991 and is the anchor of 48 Hours Investigates. Prior to 60
Minutes, Stahl served as CBS News White House correspondent.
During much of that time, she also served as moderator of Face The
Nation, CBS News’ Sunday public affairs broadcast. For Face The Nation,
she interviewed such newsmakers as Margaret Thatcher, Boris Yeltsin,
Yasir Arafat and virtually every top U.S. official. Her experiences covering
Washington for more than 20 years became the subject of her book,
Reporting Live. The stories she has covered while at CBS News range from
Watergate in 1972 on through the 1981 assassination attempt on
President Reagan and the 1991 Gulf War. She has won many Emmy Awards, including
a Lifetime Achievement Emmy. Stahl’s 60 Minutes reports “How He Won the
War,” about former FDA
Commissioner David Kessler’s battle with the tobacco industry, and
“Punishing Saddam,” which exposed the plight of Iraqi citizens, mostly children, suffering the
effects of the United Nations sanctions against Iraq, are some of her
more recent Emmy winners.
Julia Taft
Former Director, Bureau for Crisis Prevention & Recovery
UN Development Programme
As the Director for the
Bureau for Crisis Prevention & Recovery at the UN Development
Programme, Julia Taft addressed the ever growing role in filling the
gap between relief and long-term development, including US leadership
in addressing the issues of prevention, post-conflict recovery and
institution building as well as natural disaster mitigation.
Previously, Ms. Taft held high level government appointments, was
actively involved in humanitarian and development activities and is
very close to the NGO community, having headed up the largest US NGO
coordinating body. Prior to this post (1997-2001), she was Assistant
Secretary for Population, Refugees and Migration in the US State
Department. She is a champion of well-coordinated responses to
emergencies and conflict situations, as well as an advocate for
institutional reform among donors to help actors on the ground bridge
the gap between relief and development. She was the President and CEO
of InterAction from 1993 to 1997, giving her strong experience on the
development and institution-building side as well. Julia worked as a
consultant from 1989 to 1993, following an assignment as Director of
the Office for US Disaster Assistance in USAID from 1986 to1989. She
also served on the Board of the National Endowment for Democracy for
three years. Above all, as a long-term senior policy maker, she
understands the processes of governance that lie at the heart of
peace-building.
