RI Honors UN Secretary General Kofi Annan and Mrs. Annan

United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan and his wife Nane received the first McCall-Pierpaoli Award from Refugees International on May 4th.   RI chairman James V. Kimsey, who hosted the dinner at his house, stressed the importance of the United Nations in resolving conflicts and providing humanitarian assistance.  Sam Waterston of the NBC-TV series Law and Order, was the master of ceremonies for the dinner, part of RI’s 25th anniversary celebration.   Mr. Waterston, an RI board member for 18 years, said of the agency: “One of the things that is special about RI is that we go to the far corners of the world to talk to refugees, displaced people and other victims of crisis, putting RI’s own eyes on their lives and RI’s feet on their ground, and then bring the facts and recommendations back to senior policy makers.”
