Refugees
International joins the 16 Days of Action Against Gender-Based Violence
to focus attention on how the effects of displacement are experienced
differently by men and women. RI is dedicated to building greater
awareness of GBV and incorporates a gender analysis of the situation of
all displaced people and peacekeepers.
The 16 days of action begin November
25th on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against
Women, continues through World AIDS Day on December 1st and ends on
December 10th, International Human Rights Day.
What is Gender-Based Violence?
Gender-based violence (GBV) includes acts of
violence in the form of
physical, psychological, or sexual violence against a person
specifically because of her or his gender. Civilians have
increasingly become targets in armed conflict and displaced women and
girls are particularly at risk of violence for rape. They also risk sexual
humiliation, abduction as "bush wives" or sex slaves, and exploitation
by fighting forces in countries such as Sudan, Burma, Bosnia, Sierra Leone and
Liberia. Ethnic violence has often taken on a specifically gendered
dimension where women and girls were systematically targeted for
rape. GBV does not start nor stop during armed conflict and it
does not only affect females; targeted abductions of boys and forced
conscription of men is also a form of GBV. GBV can occur while people
seek refuge, in post-conflict settings, and even during peacetime.
Refugees
International is dedicated to building greater awareness of
GBV and analyzes the causes of displacement and its consequences from a
gender perspective. From the rape of women in Darfur and Burma to the
sexual exploitation of women in the DRC to the trafficking of women on
the North Korea-China border, gender issues and, in particular, issues
that impact refugee women, have been a long-term priority for RI.
RI has organized a list
of our policy recommendations, voices of
displaced men and women who have been impacted by violence and other
information below. In addition, please access our resources page to
