Group looks to expand resettlement program

An international advocacy group that works to assist and protect refugees is asking the U.S. government to broaden its resettlement program for Hmong refugees living on the grounds of a Buddhist temple in Thailand.

Refugees International of Washington, D.C., is recommending that the U.S. government consider the cases of the refugees who weren't registered for the program by the Thai government because they weren't at Wat Tham Krabok, the temple north of Bangkok, during the registration period.

"After the resettlement, it is unclear what will happen to the hundreds who chose to stay or did not qualify for resettlement for varying reasons," said a Refugees International report by president Ken Bacon and development associate Ghazal Vaghedi.
